Kathy heard the Suburban roar into the driveway just before sundown on Monday evening and ran out to meet her men. As they hugged and said their hellos, she noticed Brentâs excited smile and Lesâs big grin. âYou guys look like the cat that swallowed the canary,â she said. âWhatâs up with you two? And donât try to hide anything from me. You know thatâs not possible!â
Les cleared his throat and gestured for Kathy to join him and Brent at the rear of the Suburban. The two guys lifted the two coolers off the metal hitch tray, opened the one that contained the cape, and took it out. As they unfolded it, Brent was sure his momâs eyes were bigger than fried eggs as she realized the size of the pelt and saw the head.
âMy word, Les and Brent! That thing is huge! Who got this beast?â
Les grinned and glanced at his son. âThatâs the look we gave up two days of hunting and drove all those hours for, buddy! Was it worth it?â
Brent, an ear-to-ear smile distorting his face, answered, âSure is!â He turned to his mom. âI got this one, Mom!â
For the next half hour, Kathy stood next to the vehicle and listened as her son and husband talked about their dramatic hunt. They interrupted each other to fill in details, and when they got it all out, Kathy asked them to repeat their tale. She was speechless and kept shaking her head in awe and relief as the story unfolded again.
Finally the story was told and retold, and the men returned the hide to one cooler and toted the meat-filled one into the garage for butchering and packaging later that night. They would take the hide to show Mr. Phillips and then have it tanned and mounted by a local taxidermist.
As Les and Brent unloaded the Suburban and put away their gear and supplies, Kathy noticed a difference in her son. His quick, sure steps and squared shoulders revealed a new confidence and self-assurance. Even the tone and pitch of his voice seemed stronger. And best of all, he was sticking close to his dad as they worked side by side in companionable silence. Suddenly the prayer sheâd said right after theyâd left for their hunting trip echoed in her mind: Bring them back to me safely, and if You will, bring them back changed for the better⦠both of them. Gratefully, she acknowledged Godâs answer. She knew Brent had turned a corner and would be okay.
